Irvine was developed on the land of the former Irvine Ranch, following a master plan drawn up in the 1960s under architect William Pereira. The city is organised into villages, each with its own residential streets, schools and shopping centres, separated by wide arterial roads. The University of California, Irvine, lies in the southern part of the city, planned around Aldrich Park, a circular green space ringed by the main academic buildings. The San Joaquin Hills rise to the south, much of their open land protected, while the former El Toro air base to the north has been partly turned into the Orange County Great Park. Interstates 5 and 405 cross the city at an angle, adding strong lines to a map otherwise shaped by careful planning.
