Itaiópolis sits on the high plateau of northern Santa Catarina, where the land rolls in long ridges and shallow valleys instead of dropping to the coast. From above, the town is a small, dense cluster of streets. Around it, a much wider web of rural roads runs out to farms, forest patches and scattered communities across the uplands.
The area was settled largely by European immigrants, and Polish and Ukrainian families in particular left a lasting mark on local culture and church life.
