Jahānābād lies on the flat Gangetic plain of south Bihar, roughly midway between Patna and Gaya. The town grew along the railway and the main road that connect those two cities. From above it reads as a long, narrow settlement stretched north to south. Markets and lanes cluster close to the station, and farmland presses in on either side.
Small rivers cross the town and meet near its centre. Outside the monsoon months their channels are often shallow. The surrounding district holds the Barabar Caves, rock-cut chambers from the Maurya period and among the oldest surviving examples of their kind in India. They are carved into granite hills that rise abruptly out of the plain.
