Javānrūd lies in western Iran, in Kermanshah Province, among the mountains of the Zagros range. The town is located in a valley surrounded by steep, folded slopes, and the terrain defines its shape. The built-up area stretches along the valley floor, and roads leave town by following the natural passes between the ridges.
It is a predominantly Kurdish town, and the region around it is known for mountain villages, orchards and seasonal streams. On the map, the pattern is clearly influenced by the relief: streets closely packed where the land is flat, then becoming irregular and more sparse where the ground begins to rise.
