Jena lies in a deep section of the Saale valley in Thuringia. The river runs roughly north to south through the city, and the steep shell-limestone slopes on either side limit where streets can go. From above, Jena is long and narrow. The compact old town sits near the river, and the suburbs push up into side valleys wherever the terrain allows.
The city's name is tied to scholarship and optics. The university counted Schiller and Hegel among its teachers, and Goethe spent long periods here. In the nineteenth century, Carl Zeiss and Ernst Abbe made Jena a world centre of precision optics, and that industrial legacy still shapes large parts of the city.
