Jiaozhou is a county-level city administered by Qingdao, set on the plain near the northwest shore of Jiaozhou Bay. The land is flat, and the city's street network is largely regular, with long straight roads crossing at right angles. Rivers move slowly across the plain toward the bay, and farmland fills the spaces between towns.
In 2021, Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport opened within Jiaozhou's territory, replacing the old airport in the city of Qingdao. On a map its long runways and terminal form a large, precise shape, very different from the surrounding streets and fields. New road and rail links now connect it to the bay's other districts.
