Jinan is known as the City of Springs, and its old centre is built around water that rises from underground. Baotu Spring, Black Tiger Spring and dozens of others feed Daming Lake and the moat that encircles the former walled city. The city lies between two landforms. To the south, Thousand Buddha Mountain and a range of low hills rise abruptly at the edge of the streets, their slopes covered in trees and temple paths.
