Jinniu lies in Binchuan County, part of Yunnan's Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, on a basin floor ringed by mountain ranges. Maps of the town show a dense centre of blocks and lanes that thins quickly into farmland. Roads run outward from it to villages across the valley.
