João Câmara lies in the interior of Rio Grande do Norte, northwest of Natal, on the dry plains of the Brazilian northeast. The town is a compact grid of streets around a central square. It is surrounded by open land with scattered farms and roads that lead out toward neighbouring towns.
The town, formerly known as Baixa Verde, became known nationally in 1986 for a series of earthquakes, unusual for Brazil. The strongest caused damage and led many residents to leave for a time. In recent years the surrounding region has become a centre for wind power, with wind farms spread across the plains.
