Kafr ad Dawwār lies in the western Nile Delta in Beheira, a short distance southeast of Alexandria. The land is completely flat, and the map shows it: the town grows along straight transport lines rather than around hills or bends. A canal and the railway between Cairo and Alexandria run past it, and the streets arrange themselves in parallel bands along them.
In the twentieth century the town became a major centre of Egypt's textile industry, with large spinning and weaving works. Factory compounds and the housing built around them show up as big, regular blocks among the denser informal neighbourhoods.
