Kahama lies in the Shinyanga Region of north-western Tanzania, on the wide inland plateau south of Lake Victoria. From above, the town is organised around a main road corridor, with a denser centre of markets and shops and a looser pattern of residential streets and plots spreading into the surrounding countryside. Beyond the built-up area, the map opens into farmland and scattered settlements.
The town sits on an important trunk route toward Rwanda and Burundi, and it has long served as a stop for freight traffic moving inland from the coast. The wider district is also known for gold mining, which has contributed to Kahama's rapid growth in recent decades.
