Kalaban Koro lies just south of Bamako, on the far side of the Niger River from the capital's historic centre. Administratively it belongs to the Koulikoro Region, but on a map it reads as part of the wider urban area, a zone where the city keeps expanding into surrounding farmland and open savanna.
Its growth has been rapid, and the map shows it: fresh grids of residential plots, many laid out in regular rectangles, sit beside older village cores with less formal lanes.
