Kalomo lies in Zambia's Southern Province, on the high plateau north of the Zambezi valley. The town grew along the railway and the main road linking Lusaka with Livingstone, and on a map these two routes form its spine. Streets, a market and residential areas gather on either side of the two long lines. Beyond the town, tracks spread out into farmland and bush.
In the early colonial period, Kalomo served for a few years as the administrative headquarters of North-Western Rhodesia, until the seat moved south to Livingstone. Today it is a district centre in a farming area where maize and cattle matter, and a stop for travellers on the road toward Victoria Falls. The town remains modest in size, and its plan stays clear and uncomplicated.
