Kamiichi lies east of Toyama City, where the plain begins to rise toward the Tateyama range of the Northern Japan Alps. From above, the town sits on a gently sloping alluvial fan, with a compact centre, a network of straight rural roads and a patchwork of rice fields stretching between scattered hamlets.
The Kamiichi River runs down from the mountains through the town, and its course shapes the land around it. The area is also known for Nissekiji, a temple associated with a carved image of Fudō Myōō, set in wooded hills where waterfalls and streams descend toward the plain.
