Karşıyaka lies on the northern side of the Gulf of İzmir, and its name, meaning the opposite shore, describes its position exactly. On a map the district stretches along the waterfront, with a promenade and coastal road following the curve of the bay and neighbourhoods rising inland toward the hills.
