Karuri lies in Kiambu County, just north of Nairobi, in the highland country where the city's outskirts meet farmland. The landscape is made up of ridges and small river valleys running roughly west to east, and roads and lanes tend to follow the ridgelines, while the valleys between them are left for streams, farming and greenery.
The town has grown quickly as part of the wider Nairobi metropolitan area, with many residents commuting into the city while living in a setting that still has farms and gardens. The surrounding area has long been known for coffee and tea growing, and the older rural pattern of plots remains visible alongside newer residential development.
