Karwar lies at the northern end of the Karnataka coast, close to the Goa border. It sits where the Kali River widens into an estuary before it reaches the Arabian Sea. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets squeezed between a long sandy shore on one side and the green ridges of the Western Ghats on the other.
North of the town, a road bridge carries the coastal highway over the Kali estuary. Small islands lie offshore in the bay, and headlands to the south shelter a series of coves. A large naval base, INS Kadamba, takes up much of the coastline further south and gives that stretch of shore its own ordered outline.
A Karwar map poster captures a place where river, sea and hills come together within a few kilometres. Rabindranath Tagore stayed here as a young man and wrote about the bay. The main beach is now named after him.
