Kashin is a small town in Tver Oblast, north of Moscow, first mentioned in chronicles in the thirteenth century. Its map is dominated by the Kashinka river, which winds through the centre in tight loops. The streets follow the water, so the old town has an irregular, looping pattern that is quite different from the straight grids of many Russian provincial towns.
Kashin is known for its many churches and bell towers, which rise from the low, wooden and brick streets at regular intervals. The town is also known for its mineral springs, which have made it a spa destination for more than a century. Parks and green spaces line parts of the riverbanks.
