Katanda is a locality in North Kivu, in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, on the plains that stretch south of Lake Edward toward the volcanic highlands. The surrounding area lies in the broad region of Virunga National Park, Africa's oldest national park, and the map around the settlement is dominated by open land rather than dense streets.
From above, the settlement appears as a cluster of lanes and small compounds gathered around the main road, with tracks leading out into farmland and savanna. Rivers flowing toward Lake Edward cross the landscape, and the terrain rises gradually toward the hills and volcanoes further south.
