Kedrovka is a settlement within the city limits of Kemerovo in the Kuzbass, the coal-mining region of western Siberia. From above, it is a compact residential area, with blocks of flats and streets of private houses, surrounded by forest and by the large, clearly shaped areas of opencast coal mining.
The settlement grew up alongside the mines, and the map shows that relationship clearly. The built-up area is compact and practical, roads and rail spurs lead to the workings, and the terraced edges of the pits and spoil heaps give the surrounding land a distinctive, man-made texture.
