Kepanjen lies in East Java, south of the city of Malang, and serves as the administrative seat of Malang Regency. It sits in a fertile basin surrounded by volcanic mountains, and the land around it is intensively farmed. That setting shapes the map: a town centre of close streets surrounded by villages strung along roads between fields.
From above, the built-up area is less a single block than a loose network. Main roads carry rows of houses outward, and the gaps between them are filled with irrigated land and small watercourses draining toward the Brantas river system.
