Kętrzyn Map Poster & Print
Kętrzyn is a town in the Warmian-Masurian lake district of northeastern Poland, known in German as Rastenburg. Its historic centre is small and tightly drawn. A brick castle of the Teutonic Order and a heavily fortified Gothic church mark the old edges of the medieval town. Later streets spread outward across gently rolling ground.
The town grew around a crossing of roads and, later, railway lines. On the map these arrive from several directions and meet near the centre. Beyond the built-up area, the landscape breaks into fields, woods and scattered lakes typical of Masuria. A few kilometres east, in the forest at Gierłoż, lie the remains of Hitler's Wolf's Lair headquarters, which draws many visitors to the area today.

The Gothic church of St George, built with thick walls and defensive features, is a second strong mark on the old town's outline. Together with the castle, it frames the medieval centre.
