Kettering lies directly south of Dayton, and the two cities blend together on the map. There is no clear old downtown. Instead, the city is a wide residential area crossed by long arterial roads, with shopping strips, schools and parks set along them. The street pattern changes from straight blocks in the north to softer curves further south.
The city is named after Charles F. Kettering, the Dayton inventor behind the electric starter for cars. Kettering is also home to Fraze Pavilion, an outdoor concert venue, and to the hospital network that shares the city's name. Parks and golf courses create green areas across the neighbourhoods.
