Khmilnyk lies in the Vinnytsia region of west-central Ukraine, on the Southern Bug river in the historic land of Podillia. From above, the water shapes the plan: the river bends and widens around the town, forming islands, ponds and a long green shoreline, while the streets of the older centre gather on the higher ground nearby and newer districts spread beyond them.
The town is best known as a spa resort. Its radon-rich mineral waters have long drawn visitors for treatment, and sanatoriums set in wooded parkland occupy much of the riverside. Around Khmilnyk, the gently rolling Podillian upland is given over to wide fields and small villages, the typical agricultural landscape of the Vinnytsia region.
