Kırşehir lies in the heart of Central Anatolia, on a high, open plateau of rolling steppe and farmland. From above, the city appears as a compact mass of streets with few natural barriers, spreading outward in newer blocks along the main roads. The Kılıçözü stream passes through the urban area, and low hills rise at the edges, giving the otherwise level map a gentle frame.
The historic centre is small and closely built, with older streets arranged around mosques, markets and medieval monuments.
