Kirzhach lies in the west of Vladimir Oblast, close to the border of Moscow Oblast, on a river of the same name. On a map the river winds through the town in loops, and the streets spread along its banks. Low wooden houses in the older districts contrast with a few blocks of Soviet-era apartments.
The town grew around the Annunciation Monastery, founded in the fourteenth century by Sergius of Radonezh, one of the most revered figures of the Russian Church. The monastery grounds are still an important point in the plan. Forests and meadows surround the town, and the river valley leads out toward the countryside.
