Kitagata is a town in Gifu Prefecture, central Japan, just west of the city of Gifu on the wide, flat Nōbi plain. It covers only a small area, so on the map it appears as a compact, densely built patch. Rice paddies and the wider suburbs of Gifu surround it on all sides.
Among architects the town is known for the Kitagata housing project. It is a public housing development for which several designers, including Kazuyo Sejima, created new apartment blocks around the turn of the century. On the ground it is an experiment in modern living; on the map it adds larger, more regular shapes to the fine grain of the town.
A Kitagata map poster shows a very Japanese pattern of land use. Small blocks of houses, narrow lanes, larger housing estates and a band of rice fields interlock on flat land with no clear centre. Printed in monochrome, the fine lattice of lanes and paddies makes an intricate, balanced image.
