Kleinmachnow sits just across the city boundary from Berlin's Zehlendorf district. Its northern edge is defined by the Teltow Canal, a straight artificial waterway that cuts cleanly across the map. The streets to the south are mostly residential, and many of them are curved. They were laid out as garden-city estates in the early twentieth century, with houses set among trees and gardens.
For almost three decades the Berlin Wall ran along the edge of Kleinmachnow, separating it from West Berlin. The route of the border can still be traced on the map as a strip of green and paths. The Machnower See, a small lake in the south of the municipality, and the historic Hakeburg estate add further detail.
