Klerksdorp lies on the flat Highveld of North West province, and from above its centre is a regular grid of blocks laid out beside the Schoonspruit, a small river that runs through the town. Residential suburbs extend around the core in looser patterns, and main roads leave toward Potchefstroom, Johannesburg and the mining towns further south.
The surrounding land shows the marks of gold mining, with shafts, tailings and industrial areas spread across the open veld. Klerksdorp forms part of the Matlosana municipality along with nearby towns, and on the map the settlements appear as separate clusters linked by roads and rail lines.
