Kokyar lies on the southern rim of the Tarim Basin in Xinjiang, where meltwater from the Kunlun Mountains reaches the desert edge. On the map, it looks like many oasis settlements: a green patch of fields, orchards and houses held together by irrigation channels, with dry land beyond.
