Kulasegaram is an inland town in Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu, where the coastal plain rises into the foothills of the Western Ghats. The surrounding country is hilly and green, and rubber plantations cover many of the slopes around the town, an unusual sight in Tamil Nadu and a sign of how close it is to Kerala.
The town grew up around a junction of roads. Some climb into the hills and toward the reservoirs in the Ghats, while others run down toward the coast. From above, the streets twist to follow the land, and patches of plantation and forest press close to the edges of the built-up area.
