Kungsbacka lies in northern Halland, a short distance south of Gothenburg, at the head of the shallow Kungsbackafjorden. The Kungsbackaån river winds through town and gives the map a meandering line that the streets follow and cross. The historic centre is small and set around a market square, with low wooden buildings that survived or were rebuilt after a fire in the 1840s. Newer residential areas spread out in loops and cul-de-sacs.
The town has become a place where many people live and commute to Gothenburg, and the map shows it: the railway and the motorway run north-south and link it to the city, and the housing extends out from the centre in all directions. Toward the coast, the land breaks into inlets, peninsulas and islands, and the municipality stretches along a rocky shore well known for summer houses and sailing.
