Labuan is an island federal territory of Malaysia, off the northwest coast of Borneo at the mouth of Brunei Bay. On a map, the island's coastline is the most important feature. It is roughly triangular, with bays and headlands, and several smaller islands lie offshore to the south.
The main town, Bandar Labuan, formerly called Victoria, sits on the south coast beside a sheltered harbour. It has a compact grid of streets near the waterfront, and roads lead out from there across the island through residential areas, oil and gas facilities and forest.
Labuan is a duty-free island and an international offshore financial centre. It also has a place in Second World War history: Japanese forces in North Borneo surrendered here in 1945, and the Labuan War Cemetery is on the island. A Labuan map poster frames the whole island, surrounded by sea.
