Lajedo is a municipality in the agreste of Pernambuco, the transition zone between the humid coast and the dry sertão in northeastern Brazil. The town is small and compact. From above, a modest network of streets clusters around a centre, and the built-up area quickly gives way to farmland and scrub on gently rolling ground. Roads leading out are few and connect it to neighbouring towns in the region.
Like many agreste towns, Lajedo follows a familiar pattern: a main church and square at the centre, commercial streets nearby, and newer residential blocks at the edges where the town has grown. The land around it is farmed, and the climate is drier than on the coast. Its name comes from the Portuguese word for an area of flat, exposed rock.
