Lake Wales sits on the Lake Wales Ridge in central Florida, a long band of ancient sand dunes running north to south through the state. On a map, the town is scattered with lakes. Lake Wailes lies right beside downtown, and the street grid bends and breaks wherever the water gets in the way.
Just north of the city is Bok Tower Gardens, a carillon tower and landscaped gardens on Iron Mountain, one of the highest natural points in peninsular Florida.
