Lālpettai is a small town in Tamil Nadu, in the low coastal plain south of Cuddalore where the land is flat and heavily irrigated. This is rice country. Around the town, fields are divided by channels and bunds, and water tanks appear as rounded shapes against the fine grain of the farmland.
The town itself is compact. A few main roads meet near the centre, lined with shops and houses, and narrower streets fill the blocks between them. Beyond the edge of the settlement the pattern switches from streets to field boundaries, and the change is easy to see on a map.
