Laurinburg is the county seat of Scotland County in south-eastern North Carolina, close to the South Carolina line. It sits on flat ground at the edge of the Sandhills, and from above the town is an orderly grid of streets around its downtown, crossed by railway lines and ringed by larger highways.
The town is home to St. Andrews University, whose campus on the edge of town has a lake and a distinctive layout of buildings around open lawns. Laurinburg Institute, one of the oldest historically Black boarding schools in the United States, is also here. Beyond the residential streets the map opens into large rectangular fields and patches of woodland.
