Lawndale is a small, densely built city in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County, between Hawthorne, Redondo Beach and Torrance. It covers only a couple of square miles, and the map reflects that: a regular grid of residential streets packed with single-family homes and low apartment buildings, with commercial boulevards along the edges.
The San Diego Freeway, Interstate 405, cuts through the city on a strong diagonal and divides the neighbourhoods on either side. The Pacific is only a short distance west, but Lawndale itself is an inland grid, part of the continuous urban fabric of southern Los Angeles.
