Lelydorp Map Poster & Print
Lelydorp is the capital of Wanica District, a short distance south of Paramaribo. It was named after Cornelis Lely, the Dutch engineer who served as governor of Suriname in the early twentieth century, and the settlement grew along the route that later carried traffic between the capital and the international airport further south.
On the map the town is linear rather than centred. Houses, shops and side streets line up along the main road, with shorter lanes running off at right angles into residential plots and green land. Water courses and drainage lines cross the flat terrain, a reminder of how low and wet this coastal plain is.
