Leusden lies in the province of Utrecht, directly south of Amersfoort. From above, the town is largely made up of planned residential districts with curving streets, cycle paths and green strips between them, built in several phases around an older village core. Water features and small ponds appear throughout the neighbourhoods.
To the west and south, the town gives way to wide open space: the heathland of the Leusderheide, woodland, and the start of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, a low wooded ridge. That contrast between neat suburban streets and open nature is a defining part of Leusden's character.
