Levittown in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, is one of the most recognisable planned suburbs in the United States. From above it is a field of gently curving streets arranged into distinct sections, each built around schools, parks and pools. Few roads run straight for long, and main arterials frame the neighbourhoods rather than cutting through them.
The community was built by Levitt & Sons in the early 1950s, applying mass-production methods to housing. Each section has its own name, and a well-known detail is that streets within a section generally begin with the same letter, which makes the plan easier to navigate once you know it.
