Lianhu is a town in the southeastern part of Chongqing municipality, in steep, folded country far from the city's high-rise core. Here the land decides everything. Buildings crowd onto whatever flat ground the valley offers, and roads trace contour lines around hillsides before dropping into the next fold. On a map, the settlement looks like a narrow ribbon rather than a grid.
This corner of Chongqing sits among the uplands that stretch toward the borders of Guizhou and Hunan, a region of limestone ridges, terraced slopes and fast-flowing water.
