Liberec lies in a basin in northern Bohemia, framed by the Jizera Mountains to the east and the Ještěd ridge to the west. The Lužická Nisa river runs through the valley floor, and the city spreads up the slopes on either side, so streets bend and switch back rather than forming a grid.
At the centre, the neo-Renaissance town hall faces a compact square, surrounded by an older core of tight, irregular blocks. Around it, nineteenth-century districts built during the city's years as a textile centre fill the lower hillsides, while villa quarters and later housing estates climb higher. A tram line threads the valley and continues toward Jablonec nad Nisou.
Above everything stands Ještěd, whose hyperboloid television tower and hotel is one of the best-known works of Czech modern architecture. On a Liberec map poster the mountain appears as a clear boundary to the west, with the city's winding streets pressed into the valley below it.
