Liuji lies in the north of Jiangsu province, in the Xuzhou area, on the broad plain that stretches across this part of eastern China. The land is almost completely flat and heavily cultivated. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets set among fields divided into long, regular strips by roads and drainage channels.
The flat terrain gives the whole landscape a geometric character. Straight roads connect the town to surrounding villages and to Xuzhou, and irrigation and drainage channels run in parallel lines across the fields.
