Łódź Map Poster & Print
Łódź grew almost from nothing in the nineteenth century, when it became one of the great textile centres of Europe. Its map reflects that rapid, planned expansion: a regular grid of long straight streets, with Piotrkowska Street running north to south for about four kilometres through the heart of the city.
Unlike many Polish cities, Łódź has no major river. Its small streams were covered or channelled as factories grew, so the city spreads over mostly level ground without any natural barrier. Large industrial complexes, parks and workers' housing sit within the grid, often in blocks noticeably larger than their neighbours.
Several factory sites have been reused, most visibly Manufaktura, the former Poznański complex, and Księży Młyn, the Scheibler estate. A Łódź map poster shows an industrial city in pure outline: a strong axis, a grid and the large footprints of former mills.
