Lokossa is the capital of Mono department in southwestern Benin, in the area near the border with Togo. From above, the town consists of a few main roads with a looser network of smaller streets and compounds between them. Farmland, palm groves and bush press close to the edges.
As a departmental centre, Lokossa has administrative offices, schools and a university campus alongside markets and residential areas. It is a place where people from surrounding villages come to trade, study and deal with official business, and the roads leading into town show those connections clearly.
