Long Branch lies on the Atlantic coast of Monmouth County, New Jersey, one of the oldest seaside resorts in the United States. In the nineteenth century it drew wealthy summer visitors and several presidents, including Ulysses S. Grant, who kept a summer home there. The Church of the Presidents recalls that period.
On a map the city is shaped by the ocean. Ocean Avenue follows the shoreline, and the street grid runs behind it in long blocks parallel to the beach, broken by cross streets heading down to the water. Pier Village sits on the waterfront, and to the north the land narrows toward Monmouth Beach and the Shrewsbury River.
