Longowal lies in the Sangrur district of Punjab, on one of the flattest and most intensively farmed plains in India. From above, the town is compact, with a tight core of streets and roads leading out across an open grid of fields. Irrigation channels cut straight lines through the countryside, adding a quiet geometry to the landscape.
The town is closely associated with Sant Harchand Singh Longowal, the Akali leader who took his name from it. It is also home to the Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology, whose campus appears on the map as a large planned area, with regular roads and buildings that contrast with the organic streets of the older town.
