Ludvika lies in southern Dalarna, in the old mining and ironworking country of Bergslagen. On the map the town sits at the northern end of Lake Väsman, whose long, narrow body stretches away to the south. Streets and the railway squeeze between the lake shore and wooded hills, and more small lakes and forest surround the town in every direction.
Industry built Ludvika. The town has long been a centre of high-voltage electrical engineering, a tradition that started with ASEA and continues today. Several of the plants that produce transformers and power equipment stand in the town. They appear on the map as large block footprints among the residential streets.
