Ludwigsfelde lies in Brandenburg just beyond the southern edge of Berlin, in a landscape of pine forest, sandy soil and small lakes. It grew from a small village into a town, largely through industry in the twentieth century. The map shows a centre built around the railway line to Berlin, with homes and forest stretching away on either side.
Vehicle manufacturing defines the town. In GDR times the IFA works built the W50 truck here, and after reunification Mercedes-Benz took over the plant and now builds vans on the site. The Berliner Ring motorway, the A10, passes close by, and the large factory grounds and motorway interchanges form some of the biggest shapes on the map.
